The question I often get asked is "I've also been training for 11 years, why do you look like that and I don't?" Let's break this down, shall we? You should really be asking yourself that, that's number one, and two - why bother comparing yourself to someone else?

There are people who simply appreciate and respect the work ethic of athletes and then there are "periodical athletes" who think they are athletes, but really just simply try their hand at bodybuilding and give up, because they never really get it right and blame everything except themselves. Chances are your 11 years and someone else's 11 years have been lived in entirely different lifestyles. I bet you, if you sat down and honestly thought about the reasons of why you don't have the physique that someone else has, you'd have at least 2 full pages worth of answers. It could be the simplest things. The amount of times you skipped gym that someone else decided not to, the drinking, the smoking, the consistent eating and training, bad eating habits, temptation to resist deserts, the amount of vacations you've taken, the amount of days off you've taken, genetics, injuries, busy work schedule, the list can go on and on. Now most of the people would simply write "fuck it, I'm awesome!" across those pages, but those who realistically look at their lifespan to date, they'll understand. It's a lifestyle for guys like me, I train on vacations, I bring my vitamins with me everywhere and I don't forget to take them every day, it's like clockwork. It's not something I do for a month, two months, then go out drinking with my buddies. I don't skip the gym because it's raining or it's early or I'm tired. I don't have an offseason, I don't have cheat meals, I don't smoke, I don't drink and I don't do drugs. I still enjoy going out with family and friends, I attend events and travel plenty, my life is fitting and organized according to how I want to live it and how I want to look in the process. Doing what I do does not make me better than anyone else, as there are always people who will train harder than me, it does however, fits my life goals better.

Singing in my shower my whole life doesn't make me equivalent to Adam Levine, who does it for a living. Sean Perrine actually wrote a good footnote on dedication and consistency in October issue of Muscle & Fitness. So if you happen to be one of the people who has this issue of comparing yourself to others and asking yourself what you're doing wrong, make a list and according to that list make necessary adjustments, otherwise you are living in denial. If you make adjustments to your lifestyle, changes will follow, but if you have been training for 5-6-7-10 years with hopes of improvement and haven't seen any, it's not because I'm doing something extraordinary, it's simply because you aren't doing something right - that's the hard truth. This post does not in any way slam people that are not in shape so to speak, but more or less to help those realize the difference of lifestyles and priorities. Some people body build, others collect stamps, it's all about how you prioritize. Now go out and lift something heavy!
